Our 7th auction, held on Saturday, October 1st at Palazzo Giureconsulti in Milan, has ended with great results.

There was an extraordinarily high energy in the room beginning with the Italian States section, with impressive bidding activity and very high increases. Among the many, letter of the Provisional Government of Parma from 1859, the cover piece, with the finest strip of 4 of the green-yellow 5 cents, has realized € 115.000 from a starting price of 85.000.

The Foreign section has had a very wide attendance, both in the auction room and by phone. Fierce battle, in particular, Great Britain has obtained outstanding results. The Penny Black VR strip, already described by Danilo Bogoni on the pages of the Corriere Economia on September 19th  , has achieved € 95.000 starting from € 50.000. Lot 3030, the unissued Edward VII violet 2½d was sold for € 65.000 from a base of € 40.000. The 6d purple overprinted IR / OFFICIAL has set the auction record reaching the price of € 125.000 euro starting from a base of € 50.000.

Excellent results, as usual, also for Lots and Collections. The highlight of the section has been a complete and fine collection of “Regno d’Italia”, including outstanding rarities, which was auctioned off at € 52.000 from a base of € 28.000.

We are happy to remind that unsold lots are still available for our clients at the same auction conditions.

Zanaria Aste on National Newspaper Corriere della Sera

Section: news

Next Zanaria auction, thanks to the quantity and quality of offered items, is achieving resounding success, to the point that Corriere della Sera (Italian main newspaper) is talking about us.

In his article, Danilo Bogoni focuses on Great Britain rarities and puts a lot of attention on lot 3033, one of the most important of the sale, the strip of eight of the Penny Black “V.R.”, used to test the quality of cancellations.

The “V.R.” (Victoria Regina) 1d black was prepared for official use, but was never issued for postal purposes. Very few obliterated specimen are known in private hands (four on cover and a few loose ones used for experimental trials of obliterating inks or passed through the post by oversight). This item was found in the Northbrook archive. Mr. Francis Baring, later created Lord Northbrook, Chancellor of the Exchequer, was responsible for the treasury competition. Four positions (PF, PH, PJ and PL) underwent a cancellation removal trial after having been coated with an unidentified type of varnish and after having been cancelled by a complete strike of the red Maltese Cross.

This lot, offered with a starting price of 50,000€, is one of the most important postal history documents in existence, and we are pleased propose it to our clients.
